Aug 27: Proton says 1 in 6 VPNs are quietly tracking where your family is

Proton released a new report on August 27, 2026 finding that of the more than 7,000 mobile VPN apps it studied, 85% of the ones downloaded in the US contain trackers — and around a quarter of them actively track your physical location, roughly 1 in 6 VPNs. The whole point of a VPN is to hide where you are, yet many of the apps families install to "feel safe" are logging their location and selling it on. Parents who pay a monthly VPN fee to protect the kids are the ones being tracked.
