New survey: most people now think their TV and smart speaker are listening, and they'd yank them if they could
A fresh Reviews.org "State of Consumer Data 2026" survey of 1,000 Americans (published June 8 and getting picked up across consumer outlets this week) found that 45% believe their devices are "listening or watching without their knowledge," 59% have seen ads for something they only talked about out loud, and 78% say they'd unplug a device the moment they learned it was collecting more than it let on. Smart TVs are now in 77% of homes, with doorbell cameras and smart speakers close behind, and the assistants people worry about most are Alexa, Gemini, and Siri. A striking 83% want a law forcing these companies to spell out, in plain English, what they're scooping up.
